When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs based in current science, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss and those who personally struggle or have a lived experience.
Why We Walk:
Every year suicide claims more lives than murder, and natural disasters combined, and yet suicide prevention doesn't get the attention and funding given to other leading causes of death. It's up to Walkers like us to make Mental Health a priority in Kansas.
In 2016 (current available stats) 44,695 people died by suicide in the US, 514 were Kansans. Nationally, someone dies by suicide every 11.7 minutes. A suicide attempt is estimated to occur every 28 seconds in the US. Together we can change the culture of mental health and put a stop to this tragic loss of life.
has been working year round to change the way our communities, schools, churches, professionals, family and friends talk and think about mental illness and suicide.
